The Golf Club! is just not sexy, even though they have to sell it that way.
Why were clubs made the way they were? Who came up with using different clubs for different shots? As most new adventures in life, it didn't happen all at once but over time. Originally, it was one club and a leather pouch stuffed with feathers. Well, most likely it wasn't even that nice to begin with. It's absolutely impossible to say what person created the game we now call golf. Children have been hitting rocks with sticks since the beginning.
Rocks and sticks. That's really all a club is. It's not sexy, it's the tool we use. I don't think a carpenter goes to the hardware store and says, "Hey, I hear you have a new sexy hammer?" The carpenter wants to know if it will drive a nail as it's suppose to. A golf club is pretty much the same, we need it to function, be aerodynamic, fit our swing specs, and not break. It needs to drive that ball down the fairway like it's suppose to.
The driver, was originally the club you used to 'get the ball in play,' but now it's the club you want to hit as accurately as possible but it's really about the distance. How far can I hit that thing? Why the change? Progression in any endeavor is necessary. Changes that will alter the look of a business or game. How did the three point shot change basketball?
Gene Sarazen, changed the short game in golf when he started messing about with a club to give it more loft? If you want to talk about change...read Scotty's blog on putters. If you can design it, someone will buy it.
Change is inevitable. Generally speaking it's good. It's not always easy and for those creating the change it is often the story of failure to victory. But it's rarely sexy. Clubs just aren't sexy. So why am I writing about sex and golf clubs? Because I have an idea brewing and one wonders, is it really worth the time and energy to see if it works? Well sure it is! That's what change is about, the journey. I have an idea about club design --- it's not sexy either --- but just for the pure fun it, I want to try it. Where would be without the pure fun of attempting crazy notions, goofy ideas and odd perspectives? Bored to tears, playing the same one stick, running around looking for ducks to pluck so we could make a few more golf balls.
Swing hard and look up,
Byron
