A little help from a friend

Today, I opened the my browser to read the Fitness Tip of the Day: Surround yourself with people and things that remind you to live a healthy lifestyle.

I know that when I go to the course it's all about a good walk enjoyed! I love to be on the course, not above it riding in a cart. I understand that there are those of you who have physical conditions that will not allow you to walk and I say, "More power to ya. Glad you're out there playing!"

But for me, to ride around in a golf cart is so boring. It makes golf a huge waste of time. Today's fitness tip speaks directly to me because I struggle when I'm out there wanting to pick up a game with friends, but they are all riding. I feel like I'll slow them down.

There are reasons why I like to walk. The first is, I just like walking - period! It's good for me and helps me build endurance for tournaments and it keeps me relaxed and not rushing from shot to shot.

Another aspect of walking is the social. I find when I walk I tend to have more interaction than when I ride. There's a freedom in walking that provides an atmosphere for interaction.

All this to say, this year on tour I'm going to take this fitness tip and apply it. I might 'yank a few chains' while I walk but I'll be a much happier - kinder person, and we can all enjoy that.

Byron's Tip for walking: Set a goal to build into walking the course. This year I have a goal of building my strength and endurance, to carry my clubs every practice round at a speed that will keep up with every one else and I'll still be relaxed. At the moment I can only walk nine holes at a good clip, but that's my goal for the year...not tomorrow.
