It was 11pm on Monday night having arrived at the Des Moines International Airport (no comment)...the young woman behind the Hertz desk was overworked and running short of cars with to many people to go around. Ah...the blessings of traveling a lot...
I pulled out of the Hertz lot around 11:20pm after figuring out how to start a keyless system...boy did I feel a bit foolish having to go back into the desk and ask how to start a car. "No mam, I don't know how to start a car I'm only 54 years old."
The drive was most uninteresting at midnight. Nothing but black. But there were moments when I thought I must be going the wrong way as the only thing in sight were silo's rising from nearby barms. Not what a golfer generally desires to see on a way to a qualifier.
Arriving I found my room key, sort of where they suggested it would be and crashed. I had an 11am Tee Time.
I woke to birds chirping (man there were a lot of birds chirping) a beautiful sun shine and a view over the ninth green. Wow. This is nice. I couldn't tell you where I am but it was a lovely course by the looks of it. A midwestern course. I love midwestern courses. Tree lined, rolling hills, there's something in the air but I guess that's because I grew up on courses like this one. The staff were very pleasant...in fact I don't believe I ran into a unfriendly Iowan on this leg of my trip.
I still am placing a lot of pressure on myself to perform miracles out there but I'm learning and lowering the score in tournament and that is my goal this year, as I head into my main block of tournaments from May through November.
I head to Austin, Texas on Monday for the Pre-Qualifier for the Triton Financial Classic. I play on Thursday for a spot in the qualifier. So why am I going so early to Austin?
Monday is a travel day. To and from airports, car rentals, and lodging. For me these are the hardest work days. Then on Tuesday and Wednesday I have practice rounds. These days of practice discover what the course is like. How does this course fit my game and how will I adjust to make it work. Then Thursday is the Pre-Qualifier which is 18 holes only. This event then takes me to the following Tuesday for the Qualifier which if I place in the top four puts me in the tournament on Friday.
For one tournament it's a lot of work and this is why I'm playing more events on the Sunbelt Tour which are three day tournaments and great competition. In fact several of the guys from the Sunbelt Tour were out here this week.
Well, off to Kansas City for the weekend for a speaking engagement with Crystal (she's flying into KC this afternoon) and then Monday she's home and I'm on to Austin. Thanks for following the journey.
