Acceleration (a short piece from the second book)

What was I doing playing golf in North Carolina in late June? We’re supposed to follow the best climates around the country. Yes it might rain, or thunder and lightening, or even a small hurricane may knock us over but we’re not fools. But here I was, standing on the thirteenth tee box of a Sunbelt Senior Tour event, just across the state border from Myrtle Beach situated along the gulf coast on a very hot, humid, rainy day. In fact it was so hot – “How hot was it?” We joked that it was nice having 110% humidity because all of us over fifty guys were limber and pain free.

If I was superstitious I might have considered skipping the thirteenth hole but I’m not, and skipping holes is rather frowned on to the point of disqualification from the tournament. Number thirteen is a lovely par five that doglegs slightly to the right. Your shot off the tee box has to travel no further than 285 yards or it lands in a quiet bubbling brook that runs across the fairway. This day with the rains and a slight wind in our face there was no problem taking out the big dog and letting it fly. I hit a great drive down the left center of the fairway setting up my second shot. This was a long par five and not reachable in two shots, at least by most of us regular humans. As I walked down the fairway I noticed my ball was resting in a sand filled divot, looking like a sunbather after a long winter. Not a bad lie but not one I prefer. I made a mental note to practice more sand filled divot shots and also look into tanning salons....(this is a short excerpt from one story of the next book)
