Larry the Spectator

One of the joys of playing tournaments (or even a practice round) is having a little gallery of friends and 'Followers.' I've always seemed to enjoy this even as a junior golfer. Recently I've had two little galleries.

I met Larry walking down the 4th fairway of the US Senior Open qualifier at Green Valley Country Club. He started following us on number one but I thought he was a club member and following one of my playing partners. I discovered he is from the Vacaville area and even wore a Green Tree golf hat.  Unfortunately this was the second week of my wrist injury and I didn't understand how much it was working against my shot making. It was the following day that the decision was made to take the needed rest.

Larry was a great guy, out enjoying his first round of golf as a spectator. He joined right in with the group of friends following me and he saw some good shots from the three of us, which he seemed to truly enjoy. But what a treat for me that his first professional event as a spectator was following our pairing.

The most recent was this past Sunday. It was my first day to play in over a month. Mark Drohman, my swing coach, and I played nine holes. At least I was hoping to make it through the 9. Joining us was a good friend from Denmark, Hanne. She, as well, had never been around the course and seemed to enjoy it quite a lot. It was 103 that afternoon. I don't know what I was doing out there, much less a friend who could have been enjoying a refreshing drink and lounging by the pool. THANKS HANNE! I've discovered the Danish love the sun...I guess it doesn't show up as often there as it does here.

There's one more thing I want to say about encouragement...that's what it is when there's a gallery. When someone comes up to me, or emails me, or FB's me and mentions they have read the blog. Man, that's encouraging! This game eats at your confidence and encouragement. It's a game that, from one shot to the next, can create gigantic mental swings even in the best and most experienced players. Encouragement is way underrated in this game. Why do you think caddies get paid so well on tour? Encouragement is vital to the life of a golfer on the course.

You guys rock my world! Thanks so much.
Byron
ps. I head to Minneapolis Wednesday morning for the qualifiers for the 3M Championship with the Champions Tour. My wrist is doing a lot better. Not perfect yet but much much better. Thanks for all your words and prayers.

I guess we all love an audience whether we admit it or not. :) It is encouraging isn't it?

Great to hear your wrist is a lot better. All the best towards complete rehab and goal's acchiement.
Summer (here, in Quebec City, it is so short that you want to get the most out of it) has been busy. Hope to catch up with you later on.

Hello Jacques. Great to hear from you. My wrist took a little beating in Minneapolis for the qualifier. The front nine was fine until #7 and I started noticing some increased pain. I guess it's not quite done healing but much closer.

Enjoy the summer and don't forget to email me some thoughts about your book.

Hello Byron. Sorry to hear about that recurrent painful condition.

I sure do enjoy the summer which has been great so far.

I am planning on getting back to writing in the fall, so emailing you some thoughts about my project will a good way to kick it of.

Take care and all the best.

Jacques
