Coming Into My Own

Someone once said, "There is golf and then there is tournament golf." Learning to play tournaments is what I am really looking forward to this year. 2007 was all about regaining a swing and physical strength that I needed to begin playing serious golf. 2008 is about playing and developing into a fine tournament player. This requires mental focus and commitment.

Last week I played my first PGA Qualifier (actually Pre-Qualifier). It was great. I enjoyed being out there and applying what I learned last year and although I didn't make the cut I learned something so important and I realized how I have grown.

First, commitment to each shot is vital to playing tournament golf. If there is doubt in your mind that you won't, can't or shouldn't make the shot you are about to hit then most likely you won't. What I learned is that this applies for every stroke. Not just drives from the tee or iron shots from the fairway but every single stroke you take including chips and putts. This was my learning curve this first PGA qualifier. I can't wait to hit my next two weeks of practice as I prepared for my first PGA Champions Tour Qualifier February 28 in Los Angeles area.

During this past week of tournament play I realized how much my physical strength and endourance have grown. I'm not done with my training for the year and I desire to move to the next place in my strength and endurance but I was pleasantly surprised at how the stamina that I have gained over the past year.

One of the fun things in traveling is playing practice rounds with local players from the course of the qualifiers. I met a great crew of folks and look forward to seeing them again in a couple weeks at Goose Creek Golf Course in Mira Loma, California.

Over all, I am blessed. See you on the course.
Byron
