Rocks Don't Move

By now you might have heard that Tiger has had to pull out for the remainder of the 2008 season due to his knee injury. Wow, what an amazing feat he accomplished by winning the US Open. Did you notice in the 18 hole playoff that after a while you didn't know who to cheer for? It was a wonderful golf experience. Unfortunately, it did Tiger in for the season.

It was interesting that on Friday last week I was in the Boston area playing my third Champions Tour pre-qualifier when on the 10th hole my ball ended up resting on a rock approximately 1 foot in diameter. I thought through the best angle of attack on how to hit the ball with the least amount of jarring to my system and took a good swing at it.

Swack...the ball flew off the rock, landed exactly where I desired it to land, but have you noticed that rocks don't move! It reverberated a shock up my system that put my mind in remembrance of a tree root I hit in Houston last year and took me out of play for 4 months.

As I continued to play the next two holes my back began to tighten up...."do the tighten up..." By the 12th I had to withdraw from the qualifier as I couldn't bend over to pick up or tee up the golf ball (quite humorous actually). I had to make a decision to continue, possibly injuring myself as I did last year or to withdraw. I believe I made a wise move.

Golf is a funny game that way. Everyone thinks how physically simple the game is until you tork your body around a tree with a swing at 105 miles an hour. Or slap a rock a 90 miles an hour with a metal club. Hummm....

My back tweaked hard that Friday afternoon and I withdrew, but today I'm feeling much better and preparing for my next event. I guess at 53 I'm learning a few things. I'm learning I'm not 21, or 31 or even 41. Hey, I'm not even 51...STOP IT!

I want to thank you for all the emails, calls, and prayers that went out for me that day. They were a mighty and great help.

Here's to moving forward with full expectation of playing my next event pain free.
Byron
