One of the top questions I have to answer from friends, acquaintances and others is; "What is a mini-tour?"
Around the country there are a variety of mini-tours or developmental tours for golf. These are much like baseball farm clubs and each developmental tour takes on it's own personality and level of skill. One of the well known mini-tours is the Tar Heal Tour in the Southeast. Tommy 'two gloves' Gainey, who came into notoriety on the Big Break series on the Golf Channel, came through that tour and is now playing on the Nationwide and PGA Tours.
These mini-tours or developmental tours give players lots of opportunities to play competitively on descent golf courses and even earn a few dollars along the way yet not have to travel so far. Many of the events are in a three state region with 1, 2 and 3 day events.
Tiger didn't become who he is over night. He played hundreds of tournaments before he came charging on the PGA TOUR. Although he gained his experience through amateur play this is not always possible. This is the goal of the mini-tours. They provide players like myself, who are needing tournament play the opportunity to play at a professional level with others who are developing their tournament game.
I play on the Pepsi Tour. You might recognize the names of these PGA TOUR winners, Jason Gore and Nick Watney graduates of the Pepsi Tour.
